A no-nonsense commentary that should make all of us stop and take stock of who we are and who we want to be
Ijeoma Oluo has seen discrimination and has a lot of say about it, including the recognition that those who have discriminated against others may not realize it. This book is an extremely helpful primer for anyone who wants to have meaningful, constructive conversations about racial issues. It gave me a better understanding of how this can be achieved both with other white people as well as with minorities. The chapters about intersectionality, the issue of respectability politics and tone policing, and what we can do beyond just talking about race were especially challenging and thought provoking.
This is not a book to read and put away on the shelf. This is a book to read and reread and reread. To take things away from it and then step into action. It isn’t a comfortable read, and it’s a very important read. And an important reread. And critical - vital - to use as a guide toward taking action, not just talking.
This book was filled with very practical advice on how to talk about race, as well as how to respond if you are called racist when you aren't intending to be.

I was able to listen to this audio on Overdrive. Once wasn't enough. I felt like I might have missed something and listened to it again. There is a lot of useful information in this book.
