The story takes you the reader into the generations of two girls born in Asante land in Africa to Maame. Their brith and status into the world are different. Therefore, it would stand to reason the lifes of their descendents would be different too. As this book moves thru the generations of Effia and Esi from the British colonization, Asante wars, America slavery of Africans, civil war, Jim Crow of the south, migration to the north, the ware on drugs, and a prison system built for black males.
