I'm not rating it yet because I'm conflicted. The first half has beautiful imagery and fabulous visuals but it became tedious to read pages and pages of descriptive writing. I abandoned the audio book despite the wonderful narration by Jim Dale and switched to the hardback. I admit I skimmed some passages. There wasn't enough character development and the third person present tense kept me from becoming emotionally invested in the characters. The last 100 pages were more gripping and several sec

I loved this book! The last time I stepped outside of my normal genre was The Time Traveler's Wife and Ready Player One. I adored them as much as I fell in love with The Night Circus. It took me longer to read because I wanted to read every word and wrap myself in the smells and imagery of the mystical night circus. It was original, magical, and mysterious. Bravo!

Ms. Morgenstern's imagination is imagistic which is most suitable for poetry. She also has an understanding of archetypes which are in the mythic realm. The novel is a more recent form than myth and poetry, but the examples of the novel that I prefer have more substance in the areas of plot and character than Ms. Morgenstern can currently offer. She can tell a story after a fashion, but I prefer more drama and better pacing. Her characters based on archetypes are not well developed. They lack im

I was very, very happy that an ARC of this book was sent to me. There has been a ton of buzz about this book over the summer and it's safe to say that there are probably going to be a lot of people adding this to their Fall Must Read lists and in my opinion, the buzz is fully understandable and warranted. This book will sweep you away. I love when descriptions are so deep and so vivid that you have absolutely no trouble imagining the surroundings in the book.

Okay, so I absolutely adore circuses. That's a bit baffling to me considering that I've been to probably one circus when I was about four and the only thing I remember was dropping my popcorn into the space between the bleachers while wondering if the same would happen to me if I didn't move carefully. So, needless to say my love of circuses comes from books and movies and not from any wonderful personal experience. Anyway, so I had a feeling I was really going to like The Night Circus. And I di

Generally, I hear a lot of hype about a book and I think, "it can't be that good." Sometimes I'm surprised...I really did enjoy The Help, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and The Hunger Games series even after hearing about them for months. Sometimes I'm disappointed (Freedom...I will never stop talking about how much I hated this book...sorry). I guess it could all be a matter of taste...perhaps uber-literary isn't what I'm into. Take a look at what I've read and rated highly

If you are looking to find a little magic in life read this book! Erin Morgenstern identifies herself as a multimedia artist and describes all her work as "fairy tales in one way or another". She is able to paint beautiful visual pictures with her words. I love this book.

Very well written; interesting tension between the main characters who are caught in an impossible, magical trap. Would have preferred more character development and few characters, get rid of the bouncing back and forth between time periods, also a better resolution to the lovers' quandry. But a very good book.

This book has a lot of creativity and creates some beautiful visual imagery. However, it jumps around the timeline a lot, which made reading it in ebook format difficult as I often wanted to go back to doublecheck event order. Switched to physical book half way through. I was torn whether the author kept the "challenge" a mystery for so long because she didn't know what it was herself, or to keep that air of mystery embedded in the plot (and circus itself; the art of mystery makes it a magical e

I really loved this and looking at the author's inspiration explains why. there was a point near the end where I was frustrated feeling a trite finale coming on, but instead really loved how it wrapped up. highly enjoyable.
