What Members Thought

A well deserved winner of the Booker Prize.
Perhaps my favorite thing about Girl, Woman, Other is how Bernardine Evaristo gives a unique voice and perspective to the twelve subjects. Hearing that the story focuses almost entirely women who are black and British, I worried that the author would push a particular perspective or agenda. Certainly, in these interconnected stories, there's bound to be some overlap, but Evaristo really presents a wide spectrum, giving substance to each and every voice ...more

5/5 Book Review: Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo
Closing words… that sums up this book…

I am a longer of the long form novel. To spending 1000 pages in one character's life. Warning, this is not that kind of book, but oh how I am loving this book for what it actually is, and about 3/4 of the way though and want to spend more time with all of the characters!!! I want to teach this book.
It would be soooo great for literature circles: Have students read a story from the characters most and least like them. Add chapters to what happens next to characters. Do play lists for stories. Do ...more

I have been trying to read books representing people with different experiences than I'm accustomed to. This book explores the experiences of a wide-ranging loosely knit collection made up mostly of black women in Britain. It is a wonderful polyphonic novel.
I'm also interested in genealogy and loved the way characters connected at the end. I won't say more about that for fear of potentially spoiling it for others.
