This book is fascinating and heart-breaking in equal measure. Children forced to become child soldiers who have had their childhood abruptly ended.

No child should ever be forced to pick up a gun and to fight for a cause they do not believe it. It is absolutely disgusting what has happened to these 'child soldiers.'

Ultimately, this book is one of hope. It is a testament to those children who somehow held onto hope and who never gave in to despair.

This book was very sad to read and I was perhaps especially touched because I am a teacher and when I think of children, I think of them at school with their smiley faces enjoying their childhood. However, this book teaches us about the cruel reality many children face in other countries. It was devastating to read and picture so many children becoming soldiers and the atrocities they were forced to do. It broke my heart. Books like these break my heart and the cruelty is so hard to read, but we need to be educated about these things in order to in some small way make a difference for the better. Excellent book. Boys like Ishmael have my heart and are real heroes.
