This was a challenging book to read but I found it fascinating and hard to put down. A creative way to tell a story about the mistreatment of women, feminism/sisterhood, and patriarchy in a all-Black community. I like how Morrison wrote each chapter introducing a new main character and bringing pieces of the story. It was not until I got to Patricia's chapter that things started coming together. I wanted to read something off of my shelf to be read different. I had no idea how different Paradise would be. Living in Ruby, Oklahoma is "The Covenant." Why because of our differences or color, religion, gender do we become threatened by women? The residents didn't want inter-mingling of families with those of "the Covenant" so early one morning a posse of townsmen set out to murder this group of women. Toni Morrison will always be one of my favorites but this novel was very very lost on me. I had a hard time following even superficially because I couldn't keep the characters straight. I probably should have abandoned or chosen to approach it again in the future, but I powered through it. I'm not saying the glowing reviews are wrong. This book just wasn't for me personally - or at least I needed to be reading it as part of a course to "get it." The writing was often beautiful, though. ...more
