By now, no one needs a rehashing of the plot so I’ll simply say I loved this book and Cyril Avery is one of literature’s most delightful and compelling characters. The book is long with weighty topics and themes, but the author wisely added a surprising amount of charm, wit and humor, which is often laugh out loud funny.

One of the best books that I’ve read in the past 12 months. This is an epic. Decades and attitudes change.
The novel starts with a simple setting, a church, a brimstone and fire sermon, kicking a girl out of her town and forcing her to move to the big city.
In Dublin Catherine Goggin, delivers a child and he is adopted by the Avery’s. And life goes up and down for Cyril Avery our main character who is on a path to search for his real parents and the story of his life. But along the way there are ...more

Set in Post-War Ireland, when intolerance cloaked in Catholicism is at its height, this book follows the lifespan of the adopted boy Cyril Avery. You immediately fall in love with Cyril. Born to a unwed teenager in the Irish countryside, expelled from the Catholic Church and her family to fend for herself and unborn child. This book is told with a se ...more

I'm not sure I can come up with the right words for this amazing novel. I still have tears streaming down my face. Cyril is a far from perfect person. Every seven years we drop-in on Cyril's life. From his tumultuous introduction into the world, his lonely childhood, his selfish choices, his secrets, his moments of joy - Cyril shares his life.

This book will make you laugh, cry, and sigh in exasperation. I love Cyril Avery. This is a story of love, hate, redemption, and Ireland told through the eyes of Cyril in seven year increments. I don't want to say anymore other than this book was an incredible read. Read this one now. Seriously.
