What Members Thought
This was not the book for me. I know a lot of people give it praise and it is considered a classic, but I never got into it.
It rambled . . . it was repetitive . . . I got bored.
What was supposed to be a story about love seemed to be more about twisted obsession and I never found it endearing. None of the characters were all that great and I pretty much found myself feeling sorry for everyone.
I was thankful when I was done.

What it is: Vices disguised as virtues. Dark, evocative prose glorifying despicable behaviors.
What it isn't: a love story
It's obsession to destruction ...more

I struggled with this book from start to finish. Following the escapades of the main character was tedious. I did not relate to the main character, Florentino Ariza, at all. The premise of the story is that he fell in love with Fermina Daza when they were young and he remains passionately in love with her despite her marrying someone else.
How did he manage without her? By having one affair after another. Hmmm.
A long tedious read but I did persevere.

So glad I've finally read a book by García Márquez! Great writer.
