When I read that Tomi Adeyemi, the author of Children of Blood and Bone , had studied West African folklore, religion and culture in Brazil, I was intrigued. I am particularly interested in Afro-Brazilian spirituality. Then when I discovered that her magically gifted characters were divided into ten clans that were devoted to Yoruban spirits, I was completely sold on this novel. I had high expectations, because Adeyemi had a very unique setting, but unfortunately the book didn't live up to that. There's nothing wrong with the book, but for someone who reads a lot of fantasy and YA it just didn't feel unique enough. I would still recommend it to a teen or someone not used to reading books in this genre. It has adventure, magic, diversity, and a cool setting, so what's not to like?
