What a story! I mentioned this in one of my status updates and I think it is the best way to describe this book: every new scene in this book is out of the frying pan and into the fire!

My wife recommended this book to me and we usually have a pretty good idea of what the other will like (probably a 95% success rate). I was so excited to get on the list at my library early and be able to read The Great Alone soon after it was published. I really loved The Nightingale and was looking forward to another story of such magnitude.

I seem to be in the minority with the reviews, but this book missed it for me. I give Kristin credit for taking such a different storyline from The Nightingale. Many times authors hit it big with a certain kind of story and then just continue along the same lines, which sometimes works,

Kristin Hannah - consummate novelist. She succeeds in touching my heart and making me cry; I care so much for her characters. The relationship between Leni and her mother Cora resonated strongly with me; also the first love between Leni and Matthew. And the portrayal of Ernt, Leni's father filled with rage and pain from his Viet Nam war experience writhes and bellows off the pages of the book. This was a really engrossing read. It captured the harshness of the Alaskan wilderness so well, but also the strong communities that live there. Can't wait to read more of Kristin Hannah's work.
