This is a wonderful book about coming of age in the 60's/70's. It is written in verse which gives us snippets of a brown girl growing up in two places, New York and South Carolina. It was a very enjoyable story. ...more

Unlike most books of poetry, Jacqueline Woodson's memoir, Brown Girl Dreaming, is a cohesive mosaic comprised from poems, each beautiful in its own right. Stories of her Daddy's lung cancer and death, her younger brother's lead poisoning and illness, her uncle's time in prison, and her family's love are threaded throughout the book, pulling the individual into a whole.

This audiobook was incredible. Woodson's storytelling is so riveting and it was a joy to listen to. I was completely invested in it and if anything, I wanted more. I think the format of this really lends itself well to an audiobook too - the poetic nature of the writing was a bit harder for me to read in print although it is still lovely. ...more

Such a beautiful book. Everyone should read this.
