I enjoyed this book so much. It was like a seven layer cake, it just kept revealing itself, layer after layer. So funny and so smart and so much going on it's almost impossible to describe. At one point early in the book the situation seemed pretty dismal but then another layer presented itself and there were so many more to go. Just delightful--even though the end, the very last page was a tiny bit hinky--and that's a reference to the book. One of the best reads I've had in a long time. ...more

Shelves: kindle, book-club, 2018

To be fair, I'm not a satire person. I can see how it can be funny, but to me satire seems mostly like taking a character who's an asshole and then turning up their assholery to 11. There are enough assholes in the real world that I don't need to go looking for them in my fiction.

My review is also colored by the fact that I've spent large swaths of my life working and living around the kind of people being lampooned here and my memories aren't fond enough that I want to revisit, however sarcast ...more
