I confess I saw the movie, Love, Simon, first, which was actually fine. It didn’t rob me of the pleasure of reading the book. Simon is an incredibly heartfelt novel on what it’s like for teens to come out as gay - to their parents, families, friends, and even the world they live in.
When you see the horrifying statistics of teens being kicked out of their homes just for being their authentic selves, you can see why it’s not an easy thing to do.

Listened to this on audio. This book is for mature teens. Most of the book is written through e-mails between Simon and a person called Blue. No one knew that Simon was gay. I loved the families support of Simon once he announced he was gay. There is diversity. Just be warned though there is sexual talk, underage drinking and bullying.

“Sometimes it seems like everyone knows who I am except me.”
I don't usually gravitate towards YA contemporary novels anymore since I often find them predictable and a bit tad too dramatic. A lot of things has changed since then regarding my views on the genre and how it is being written. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda has been recommended to me by my friends, and I have heard a lot of great things about it. Also, I needed some light and easy read to get me through my reading slump.

To be fair, I'm definitely not in this book's demographic so I know I can be a bit harsh on the plot points that were convenient or contrived. That being said, I really liked the way the author and the story called out prejudices of different sorts. I have mad respect for an author who makes me think, "Ooh, you knew better than to make that assumption/hold that stereotype" when I think I'm just going to be reading a fluffy YA romance. Good job, Albertalli.

“It is definitely annoying that straight (and white, for that matter) is the default, and that the only people who have to think about their identity are the ones who don't fit that mold. Straight people really should have to come out, and the more awkward it is, the better. Awkwardness should be a requirement.”

I tried to watch the movie before listening to the book, I wasn't impressed (and didn't finish). But, I gave the book a try anyway. I'm glad I did.
