Beartown, a declining hamlet in the middle of a Swedish forest, has one big hope - ice hockey. Beartown's junior hockey team, the Bears, has made it to the national semi-finals, and - if they go on to win a championship - might attract a new sports arena to Beartown, along with tournaments, hotels, tourist traffic, and so on.

This boon to Beartown's economy would be welcome to business owners, residents, and hockey sponsors. Thus, the high school boys who play for the Bears are pressured by both

"Culture, Values, Community" is the motto of the Beartown Ice Hockey Club. It's junior team is playing in the semifinal. All the hopes of Beartown are resting on the shoulders of the team. Kevin, Benji, Bobo, Amat and William are five of the twelve team members, ages 13 to 17 years old, who carry the aspirations of Beartown. David, the coach, and Peter, the general manager, are shouldering the responsibility of the hopes and dreams of the whole town. If the junior team wins the semifinal, and th ...more

I really love Backman's ability to portray human emotion and psychology. I have liked everything of his that I have read. This book was hard to read at times - and all the more so because I can think of at least two different news stories in the past couple years where this scenario played out. ...more

Oftentimes the best books aren't just books, they're an experience. This book is an experience well worth having.

There's something very unique about growing up in a small town with few economic prospects, where even intermittent success at sports is what really causes the heart of the town to beat. It's something that's very hard to explain to people who grew up differently; it's nearly impossible to explain to someone else's satisfaction why teenagers carry the weight of the town and its resid

Surprisingly, it is difficult to review and rate this book. It has its moments of greatness and also parts that left me indifferent even though I understand that they were well written.
Sport is the central theme, but it is also a tool to open doors to discuss other topics: acceptance, social culture and ambiguity of rape, immigration, adoration of sports icons, success, ambition, small city politics, personal integrity, friendship, and many other noteworthy themes and topics.

Sometimes, there w

I read that this was made for TV. That makes sense. It would have been a much better TV show. There's a lot of good drama. But it reads like an after school special. Very heavy-handed. A lot of issues are touched upon, but there's not a lot of new insights or perspectives. There's a lot of stereotypical characters.

This rant was hilarious to me:

"'No, I don't just want to win, Kira. I want to crush them! I want to give them an existential crisis. I want them to walk out of the negotiation room an

I read this book for the Goodreads' Diversity in All Forms book club. It was our book pick for the month of December (?). I couldn't come up with a review that would accurately explain what this book is about. YOU MUST READ IT!! For one, if you are a hockey fan you will love it because this book is built around hockey in the small town of Beartown. Beartown's history and future is built on the backs of those who have played hockey in their A and B leagues. Some have went on to play in the NHL. I ...more

Would have been 5, but the ending was a bit draggy. Brought me right back to my days of following the JR C hockey team in my small town. Loved it.
