4 to 4.5 (I need half stars!)
This was a very interesting and well written story of Afghanistan and how it has changed over the last 50 years or so. It was fascinating to get the impression of things from someone who lived through it. While a fictional story, it is obvious that the author drew from his own experiences.

This is a hard read, especially as the main character continues to make poor/heartbreaking decisions in the first third of the book. After reading that, I had to take a break before diving into the present story line. It was slow for a few dozen pages before picking up again. I finished the last half in one evening.

I've tried to persevere with this book, I really tried. But when the main character is so unlikeable, I'm not really interested in reading his story (or what he thinks is his story) of redemption.
