This book is like sweet and soar sauce--teenage angst with a box of kleenex. Brunt does cover the tough issue of AIDs both privately and publicly. Though there was a time or two I wanted to slap a character for belly mouning, I'd still suggest the book as a good read. ...more

This is a beautiful novel. The emotions emanating from all the characters are true and heartfelt. Even the mother with her strong convictions toward Toby and Finn finds solace. The author nailed the time period with precision. I'll be thinking of these characters for a long time. ...more

What can I even say about this book? This has quickly taken a dear place in my heart and is easily one of the best books I've ever read.

It is the touching, heartbreaking story of 14 year old June, who is dealing with love, loss, and figuring out the difficult balance of different relationships in her life. It was also so interesting to see a young girls perspective of AIDS and watch how it affected her in a completely different way than it did her uncle who experienced it firsthand. I wanted to

What a marvelous and beautiful book.

There is considerable talent in the way the author orchestrates this work. You don't really realize how everything is going to tie together eventually and make you understand how gorgeous human love can be and how stupid our constraints are.

“But what if you ended up in the wrong kind of love?” Julia asks. “What if you accidentally ended up in the falling kind with someone it would be so gross to fall in love with that you could never tell anyone in the world a

At another time I may have given this book 3 stars. But it was the right book for me right now. The book is set in 1987, the year I graduated from high school, so the references to music and pop culture hit just the right cord for me. When was the last time I thought about the band, Yaz, anyway? The relationship between the sisters reminded me of my own complex (and never reconciled) relationship with my own older sister, that depiction of being 14, and the idea of having feelings others saw as ...more

I needed this book.

A coming-of-age story set in the late 1980s about a girl who has just lost her uncle. It was fantastic. It had all the things I love: a coming-of-age story, art, unlikely friendship, sisters, and a little rebellion.

While reading it I was reminded of how impossibly frustrating the late 80s must have been for those living and dying with AIDS. No one knew anything about the disease and everyone was so unwilling to even talk about it. I highly recommend reading And the Band Pla
