If goodreads allowed for 1/2 stars I'd give it a 2.5, somewhere between fair and good. The novel started out strongly but failed to deliver. I won't repeat the synopsis here, as it's been done too much as it is. In fact, if you plan on reading the book don't read published reviews, as major plot points are given away and you may as well skip half the book.

I've been curious about Jhumpa Lahiri for some time, but the urgency with which I desired to read her works had been dulled repeatedly by negative comments. Often, I'd hear a fantastic review of one of her books, only to be followed by an extremely negative one. Overrated was the word I have heard most often. Though I was still curious, I put her off repeatedly. Hoping to read all the selections in this year's Man Booker Prize shortlist forced me to finally give Lahiri a try. Thank you, Man Book

Now I see what all the fuss is about!
The writing here is exquisite and I immediately went out and picked up Unaccustomed Earth to read next. I understand her short stories are even better than her novels. Seriously? Maybe that was before this novel was published. It's been on several year-end best lists and I understand why. Lahiri is truly gifted! I'm sold!

"The Lowland" is yet another great release by Jhumpa Lahiri, who is quickly becoming one of my must-read authors. This book looks at two very different brothers. Subhash leaves India to make a new life for himself in the United States. Udayan stays behind in India where he is drawn to the Naxalite movement. His idealism will put him in danger. This is a story of family ties and human nature written in Lahiri's fantastic writing style.
