A great book! Would be a wonderful book for a book group to discuss. I watched the movie first and then read the book, which I never do, but I couldn't resist watching it on the plane back from Spain. The movie follows the book very closely. You will not be disappointed in either one!

Through lots of coincidences of birthday and Christmas presents which meant I have read all the other Fredrik Backman books before the first one, i.e. this one, I was getting quite anxious that somehow this first book from what is now definitely one of my favourite authors would be disappointing. Should not have worried. Ove enchanted me from page 1, especially because in so many ways he reminds me of my dad, but because like all of Backman's books this book depicts the good and the bad of Swedi

Man! I put this books off for so long because I either love or hate these type of books. All too often it’s hate, as I experienced with another book this week. But this was amazing! I can’t explain it because descriptions can’t do it justice. It’s not the type of book you can describe. I don’t like the movie Up, and stories about old people finding love don’t get me excited. Wow. I absolutely love, LOVED this book. What an outstanding book! I started reading this book not knowing much about it other than it was about a grumpy old man and recommended by Goodreads. I am so glad I followed this recommendation! I was quickly hooked with Backman's remarkable story-telling talent and humor. The main character, Ove, became so real from the very beginning and likable in a very unconventional way as one starts to learn about his life growing up. I thoroughly enjoyed reading

While I didn't love Ove as much as I loved the Beartown trilogy, I did enjoy this story of a curmudgeonly widower who finds himself needed and eventually loved by the people in hos neighborhood. Backman certainly believes in the power of being neighborly and the connection of humans, as that seems to be at the heart of all of his novels. Now I can let myself watch the Tom Hanks movie. 4 stars.

This book snuck up on me. While reading, I continuously found myself touched by events. I would just be reading along not expecting it and have to chuckle out loud or my eyes would feel with tears. Ove is a total grouch to everyone. He goes along and does what needs to be done in all situations. If something is broken, he fixes it. He's Mr. Rule Follower to the extreme. He works for everything, taking nothing for free. He helps so many just because he sees a problem and does whatever the solutio
