You really get the sense of community and family that people living through the Blitz must have felt with each other, through this lovely work of fiction. A young woman takes a job at a book store, not realizing at the time just how she would affect other people's lives. She reads aloud to those waiting out the bombing alongside her, in the shelters. Before she even knows it, she's discovering the power of words.
