I gave in and bought this book because it dropped in price but this was another one with high rating that didn't resonate with my reading brain.

I DNF @ 25% as I couldn't torture myself any further. YA with YA immaturity and drama so parked it. ...more

First, I know this series has been out for a while, I just always thought it was a Fifty Shades knock off, so I was never really interested. About a month ago I was bored and decided to watch the movie on Netflix. Immediately after finishing that, I started the second movie and then bought this book.

I understand that I'm not the key demographic for this book (I'm 34), so a lot of the thoughts and concerns I had, I probably w There's a lot to unpack here! First, I know this series has been out for a while, I just always thought it was a Fifty Shades knock off, so I was never really interested. About a month ago I was bored and decided to watch the movie on Netflix. Immediately after finishing that, I started the second movie and then bought this book.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
I understand that I'm not the key demographic for this book (I'm 34), so a lot of the thoughts and concerns I had, I probably wouldn't have thought of ten years ago. He is clearly toxic and their relationship is toxic, hands down. Yes, he may be sexy and exciting and intriguing, but no woman (or person) deserves that kind of emotional abuse.

That being said, Anna Todd knows how to write a good story, despite Tessa being annoyingly goody goody sometimes. One thing I felt was kind of annoying was her reluctance to lose her virginity, yet she had no issue having him go down on her or giving him a blow job [insert eye roll here]. I also felt like her descriptions of college seemed to be written by someone who'd researched and read a lot about what college is like, but never actually went.

After reading the book and watching the movie, I was glad the producers made some of the changes they did in the movie. Having Hardin be dared to make her fall in love with him just seems less cruel than a bet to take her virginity (showing his friends bloody sheet? Eww!), like he did in the book. Obviously both things are cruel, but there's something exceptionally twisted about taking someone like Tessa's virginity just to make some money and then use the cash to paint her car and make a deposit on an apartment for the two of them. I also liked that her mom was less bitchy in the movie, and wasn't as obsessed with having Tessa and Noah get together as the book was.

If you like a guilty pleasure, I recommend this, despite it's obvious flaws. Is it kinda trashy? Yep. Will I absolutely be reading every single book. Definitely! I give it an A-.

What an angsty book! Such an emotional roller coaster!
I liked Tessa, she seems smart and centered, if not a little to soft. She allowed too many times to be stepped on, which I didn’t like one bit. But she’s 18 and having her first adult relationship... so I can understand that part.
Now Harry, that’s a different story. I can’t really decide if I liked him or not. He’s well described as a hot mysterious young guy, but his mood swings gave me literally the hives. So moody!
