Shelves: mystery-with-some-romance

2 ½ stars. Interesting but not my kind of book. Meanness, pain and terrible hurt to several people. It feels like a tragedy.

I want to root for someone and have anticipation. This is mostly a victim feel. So much pain that it’s hard to feel hope or anticipation. Sure, I am rooting for the main couple Lane and Lizzie, but it didn’t feel good. It was not an uplifting happy feeling at the end. It was more like “they survived.”

It’s the start of a long story with three major issues unresolved, to be 2 ½ stars. Interesting but not my kind of book. Meanness, pain and terrible hurt to several people. It feels like a tragedy.

One couple is together at the end so it qualifies as a romance, but I don’t want to call it a romance. We missed the beginning of the relationship. That’s the best part - how they meet and how they develop a relationship The back story is that they fell in love and then separated. This book begins two years later and is about getting them back together. It’s mostly Lizzie learning that she assumed the wrong things about Lane.

I did not like the big misunderstanding toward the end. Someone does something bad to Lane. He should have quickly told Lizzie, but he did not. So Lizzie heard about it, assumed the worst, and wouldn’t answer his phone calls.

There are two other couples who love each other but have not gotten together. They act like they don’t like each other. For both couples, when one confesses their love, the other is mean or insulting and is not honest in response. So they continue in pain and stay apart. I guess that’s ok. Their stories will be in future books.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book yet. This is a book that I was eagerly anticipating to come out. It pains me to say this but, I found it to just be ok. Yes, it was entertaining in a soap opera kinda way, So it did keep my interest. It wasn't what I was expecting though that's for sure. There was SO much going on & SO much drama with a few different storylines that revolve around the same family. Also, there wasn't any romance at all in this book which was disappointing. 5 stars for the angst level alone! As I hit 91% in this book, I was thinking NNNNNOOOOOOO as there was not enough time left!

No spoilers from me and I have to hope that the Warden doesn't leave us hanging for too long! ...more

Usually I really enjoy J.R. Ward's work but I really struggled with this book. The characters felt flat and the story between Lane and Lizzy was to me totally ridiculous. so many characters were skated across and the progression of the story just made me roll my eyes. The only characters that caught my interest were Edward and Shelby and they would be the only incentive to read the next in the series.
