I loved the stories and it goes without saying that James Marsters is the man. He's so perfectly Harry.
The drawback with short stories is that some of the things that bug me about the Dresden Files, and which make me take breaks in between reading the main series books, is highlighted a bit more through this shorter mode.
The repetitive introductions. I can't take it. Re-describing Harry, Murphy, some of the magic, etc.

A nice collection of shorts, but given the range of time over which they were written, inevitably uneven. The highlights:
"Day Off" is a genuinely humorous tale of Harry trying to enjoy a well-earned day of respite and a break with his then girlfriend, Anastasia Luccio. Predictably, everything that can go wrong immediately does and Butcher indulges in his sadistic need to punish every good deed Harry does for our enjoyment. Witty banter and compromising circumstances make for an enjoyable and bri ...more

Side Jobs is about as mixed as you'd expect a short story collection of odds and sods to be.
It should be prefaced that the collection has a singular purpose of getting the shorter in-universe stuff published, plain and simple. So when the first story is described by Butcher as a bit rough, he's not kidding. It also allows Butcher to play around in the universe a bit, such as with stories from the perspective of the vampire Thomas and from Karrin herself (my personal favorite story in the book). ...more

The Dresden Files is one of my favorite ongoing series. I've pretty much loved every novel so far. It doesn't hurt that they get better with each successive novel.
Side Jobs was interesting, because it is a compilation all of the short fiction that Jim Butcher has written set in the Dresdenverse AND includes a new story that takes place right after Changes. That said, if you haven't read Changes, don't read the final story until you have done so.

Side Jobs is a collection of short stories and novellas published by Jim Butcher in various anthologies. Each story follows Harry Dresden, Chicago's only Wizard for Hire, on smaller cases in between books (and one case that is from Thomas's POV). The only exception os the last story, which is new for the collection, and takes place about two hours after the ending to Ghost Story (and made me want to go out and read that book immediately . . . sidenote, this story may also be indirectly responsib

3.5 stars, really. I really enjoyed the different stories presented here - the different perspectives and shorter jaunts were fun and the collection really highlighted how much Harry has grown and developed as a person and in his power across the series to this point.
I didn't love it, though. For a series that has been getting bigger in scale and impact, while keeping to the Dresden "formula" these mostly lacked that punch for me. It felt like a step back in places, too, probably due to a lot o ...more
