I'm so glad I'm rereading these because I absolutely forgot about who did it in this whodunnit. As always, Sanderson is so good at setting up his endings in such a clever way and I love how immersive his worlds become! This series pulls no punches, and things only get more intense from here on out.

Definitely moving in a better direction than the previous one- Shadows of Self manages to tell an exciting industrial-revolution era fantasy adventure without getting overly bogged down in repetive descriptions and "isn't my creation amazing?" exposition.

Review upon a reread via audiobook. Score stays the same. This book does an excellent job of raising the stakes while still maintaining a personal, smaller scale than previous Mistborn books. Steris still takes a backseat in the narrative but you start seeing bits and pieces of her come through at the beginning before the plot gets going.

I've enjoyed every Sanderson book I've read, but this series just isn't doing it for me. I've discovered the steampunk western is not really my thing. Loved the opening, enjoyed the magic system as always, the interactions between the characters was solid, and then the actual story started. The big fight didn't grab me, the ensuing chapters bored me, and I can't hang on the metal magic descriptions anymore, I've just had enough of it all.
