Jemisin is soooo much more than a "mere" genre writer. Her imagination is rivaled only by her command of all a novelist's tools, and she takes enormous risks which pay off in startling ways (I'd never think I'd like a book narrated in second person, but here, for her reasons, it works). I have complex feelings about this book, but overall it was excellent. It has a super interesting premise, albeit confusing at times, and I couldn't put it down. The author did an amazing job with diversity of characters, which is very refreshing to read in the fantasy/sci-fi genre.
