I read this book because it was book of the month in my group. The story is based in a kind of middle east/Mediterranean setting, focusing really on Al-Rassan. The book tells the story of political manoeuvring and military campaigning for besieging Al-Rassan. There are many factors involved and a lot of back stabbing and just plain old stabbing going on.
The bulk of the story centres on Jehane a healer that is attached to one of the military groups.

Yeah, I teared up at the end there. Fantastic read, Guy Gavriel Kay is a master at creating realistic relationships that are striking in their humanity. It's these relationships that truly drive the story, although the backdrop of a changing world is certainly moving in its own right. I might update this review later once I've had more time to collect my thoughts, but for now simply know that I loved this book. ...more
