I read this book because it was book of the month in my group. The story is based in a kind of middle east/Mediterranean setting, focusing really on Al-Rassan. The book tells the story of political manoeuvring and military campaigning for besieging Al-Rassan. There are many factors involved and a lot of back stabbing and just plain old stabbing going on.
The bulk of the story centres on Jehane a healer that is attached to one of the military groups.

Easily the best book I've read this year. Beautiful story done by an absolute master. Still can't believe how good it was.

Yeah, I teared up at the end there. Fantastic read, Guy Gavriel Kay is a master at creating realistic relationships that are striking in their humanity. It's these relationships that truly drive the story, although the backdrop of a changing world is certainly moving in its own right. I might update this review later once I've had more time to collect my thoughts, but for now simply know that I loved this book.
