I think this was the first novel I finished in almost half a year, which probably says a lot more about my current mental state than this book, but still kind of works in the book's favour. It was a great read, and balanced the thin line between allegory and beating one over the head.

The Lions of Al-Rassan invites the reader to read slowly, at least at first. We're dropped into the story in media res, and the politics are complicated. The book is set in an analogue of Moorish Spain, complete with three warring factions who practice three different religions. Guy Gavriel Kay doesn't rely on exposition, which makes the world feel fully-realized, if also, admittedly, somewhat confusing.

Guy Kay's historically-inspired fantasies never disappoint. The characters and plot are just so interesting and well-drawn, and the storytelling just draws you in. Fans of historical fiction would like this. The fantastical elements are kept to a bare minimum.
