A collection of four longish short stories by King, includes: 1922, Big Driver, Fair Extension, and A Good Marriage. 1922 involves a murder and the slowly developing insanity of the murderer. Pretty standard stuff, with some pretty gruesome imagery. Big Driver was probably the most interesting tale, although it involves a rape, which was very unpleasant, and then the rape victim seeking revenge, which was satisfying. I have come to the conclusion that the novella is King's best forum; tight enough to avoid his propensity for over-expansion, yet still long enough to develop his characters and ideas. Plus, this is exactly as promised: very dark stuff by his recent standards.

I was a Stephen King fan in high school and shortly thereafter, then I moved on and never really went back until now. For various reasons, I was really excited to read this collection and my expectations were high. The first two stories bored me. I couldn't find anything in them to really catch my attention. This book is extremely harsh, 4 stories about revenge in various forms. Each story is blunt and painful in a new and different way, you'll actually feel relief when you finish the book, but thats what makes it special. This is a book you will feel that you need to share with other people because it's like a secret, a secret that hurts to keep to yourself. Read at your own risk, and enjoy.

Probably one of King's best short story collections, for certain. I loved the dark tone of all four stories and was really surprised at how deeply King went into exploring human nature. These weren't stories about monsters and super villains - they were just stories about people, reacting to life in their own way.
