Well, what a depressing book. Poor, poor Jude.
Second reading. A masterpiece!

If I were to sum up Jude the Obscure, and really all of Hardy's novels in a sentence, that would be the one.

best depressing, onslaught of gloom and doom book you could ever hope for. Jude - just brilliant.
