If I were to sum up Jude the Obscure, and really all of Hardy's novels in a sentence, that would be the one.

I loved Sue and the internal battles she had to fight as a result of her progressive inclinations in an unyielding and unforgiving world. The banter between Jude and Sue on the topics of religion and marriage was masterf
