This is one series which I wanted to read for so long but somehow skipped so far and I haven't even finished the movie trilogy having seen only the first part and to tell you the truth the end of the story and many more details have (I wouldn't call them spoilers) now become the part of pop-culture. And like I said in my review for Hobbit I finally started reading this series after I finished the first book on the 'Wheel of Time' series.

And like I said in my review for Hobbit I finally started reading this series after I finished the first book on the 'Wheel of Time' series.

Coming back to the book, like the start of the book makes clear this is not a trilogy but a single story divided into 6 parts which are presented as three books with book containing 2 books. Fellowship of the Ring is where the story begins and move forward but once again for me it hit the critical part where I have seen the movie which has much more action and at least the first book is lighter on action. Though other details are so wonderful that you just can't refrain from appreciating it. The writing the poems the description all was magical.

The part about the action is not just for this book but rather it's a common peril for the stories or books written 50 years or so ago movies based on them is full of action and original story would be something else entirely. Here at least that much was true but I was dismayed that Boromir doesn't say 'I doesn't simply walk into Mordor' I kept on hoping that the line would come up but alas never did or I missed it big time. I don't like to write long reviews and saying like to is wrong as I am not sure that I would be able to write wonderful reviews like Anish and few other awesome reviewers.

I liked reading this book and can't seem to think of a good reason for skipping this series so far but I am just happy that finally I would be able to find the elements inspired by LOTR in other books but even more than that I want to ensure that I do not miss up on wonderful stories just because I had some preconceived notions about it. But now it would be no longer and I have already started up on the next part.

This one is a no-brainer if you have so far like me skipped this series then finally let go and jump all in.

People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put I just love reading and so to that end I have made it my motto to just Keep on Reading. I love to read everything except for Self Help books but even those once in a while. I read almost all the genre but YA, Fantasy, Biographies are the most. My favorite series is, of course, Harry Potter but then there are many more books that I just adore. I have bookcases filled with books which are waiting to be read so can't stay and spend more time in this review, so remember I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading. ...more

I went back to re-read this as an adult (because I didn’t feel comfortable saying I’d read it when I was 13—knowing how poor my attention and comprehension was at that age.) I’m glad I did. I truly couldn’t appreciate the scope and grandeur of this book the first time around.

Loyalty, adventure, legacy, wisdom, underdog heroes, good vs. evil, angry quasi-sentient trees… This “I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”

Loyalty, adventure, legacy, wisdom, underdog heroes, good vs. evil, angry quasi-sentient trees… This story has so much going for it, though it’s truly just the setup for an overarching masterpiece. While it still may be my least favorite of the trilogy simply for its unhurried pacing, I still have to bow to the utter brilliance of Tolkien. Not only did he invent an entire language (Elvish), world history, and vast variations in cultural nuances, the amount of music he includes (all culturally and racially distinct) is beyond impressive.

Note: I wholeheartedly recommend listening to the unabridged audiobook at some point, regardless of if you’ve read the standard version before. Beyond the narration being of radio play quality, the many music pieces that are actually sung add a striking layer of depth and richness to this already superb work of fantasy.
(When I first read this at a young age, I breezed through the musical portions while processing them as poetry. This new level of comprehension has stuck with me far better.)

I won’t pretend to dissect Tolkien’s prose or otherwise do such a master an injustice. I will only say that I enjoyed it far more now that I have a more extensive list of literature under my belt. And I hope that anyone who might have found tedium in his sprawling literary style early in life give him a second chance later on down the proverbial road.

There are quite a few differences from the movie in the book - but I can see why!

This full cast dramatization is extremely abridged from the actual book--which unfortunately annoyed me to no end, even though it largely follows the material excised for the movies.

For me, the problem was twofold.
The voice acting wasn't close enough to the movies to satisfy my now ingrained bias, true... but I also found some of the voices deeply irritating. The hardest to listen to were Sam and Merry. There was a shrillness about them that made me want to quit and find a different ve ...more
