I have finally finished this iconic book that is the basis for the biggest movie of all time and now I can watch the movie as well. I took a long time to read this book because I was all alone in the house and didn't want to add the wild things from the book to my already overactive imagination. Well, it's finally done and I will first watch the movie very fearfully as I am again alone in the house LOL. And to also read Doctor Sleep in the next year.

For the first half things were moving at such a glacial pace that I wondered if horror was the right genre for this book, but once things picked up(or went downhill), it was a pretty thrilling ride. Honestly I don't get scared that easily as far things of the ghost variety are concerned but for me the highlight of the book has to be the character of Jack Torrance. I want to love Stephen King's books, but I'm not sure I'm ever going to get there. This was my second of his fiction (I loved On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft) and I'm still very underwhelmed. The Shining has been one of my favorite horror movies my entire life and I've been looking forward to finally reading the book (because "the book is always better!") since I was probably about 10 or 12. I can't even remember how many times I've tried--and failed--to read it since my aunt gave me ...more

A classic for sure but not my favourite Stephen King novel. Maybe it was my love for the movie that made me like the book less (usually it works the other way around for me). Mostly I just wanted the book to creep me out like the movie did but it didn't. The movie seems to pull off the "less is more" aspect of suspense in films like Jaws (the fact that you so rarely see the shark makes it all the more terrifying). Stephen King is known for his detailed plots and expansive narratives so the detai
