Plot:
Tessa came to London on the request of her loving, but often dimwitted, brother Nate. Their parents died when Tessa was young, and for most of her life, it was their Aunt Harriet, until she recently died. With nothing keeping her in New York, Tessa sold their apartment and belongings and joined her brother overseas in London. At the docks, Nate was too busy with work to greet her but sent a letter saying to follow the Dark Sisters who would lead her to him. Well, that was a lie. The Dark Si Plot:

The Dark Sisters, Mrs. Black, and Mrs. Dark, are warlocks, who force Tessa to use her powers, one she did not realize she had, to morph into other people, some recently deceased, and figure out their last thoughts. If Tessa did not comply, the Dark Sisters would kill Nate, and only after they married her off to the Magister, would Nate be set free. That all changes when these two strange men, Will and Jem, break Tessa out of the Dark Sisters' house and bring her back to the Institute. As shadowhunters, part of the enclave (conclave is the American term), they are sworn to protect downworlders as part of The Accords, which is only ten years old and many still disagree with. Tessa is confused about this new world she is now part of but is willing to trust her new shadowhunters friends to help her save Nate and stop the Magister, hoping against hope that this is all just one bad dream and not her living a real-life fiction novel.

Thoughts:
After the adventures of The Mortal Instrument Series, Cassandra Clare rewinds her series, giving us this trilogy based in 1878 London. Looking at this novel, you do not need to read The Mortal Instruments to understand what is going on. As the whole shadowhunter world has to be explained to Tessa, Clare lets readers figure out things along with Tessa. That being said, there will be some easter eggs you miss given that this book brings back Magnus Bane (a favorite from The Mortal Instruments) who, by time and location, is the lover of everyone's least favorite vampire Camille. Clare seems to be unable to write short books, or one with many chapters, which slows the plot down real fast. With this novel almost reaching the 500-page mark, it only has twenty chapters (excluding the epilogue) making it a very long read at some points. However, with this slowed down plot, Clare really does a fantastic job building up the world, especially the 1878 London vibe. Clare gives us several strong female characters to admire, that given the time did not have as much power in society as they should have. Unlike the modern shadowhunter world, this one had servants and drivers, as well as reputations within the outside world to hold. The most fascinating character Clare has is Jessamine, a shadowhunter by birth but would give anything to leave the enclave (like her parents) and live a normal Lady life. Different than before because Clare never wrote about a character who refuses to be a shadowhunter, but now we have Jessamine who wants to put this life behind her. Then we have the boys of Jem and Will, both complex characters who seem to have an eye for Tessa but have dramatically different reactions to her. Jem wants to help, to learn about Tessa and share with her the deep dark parts of himself. Where Will has the middle school boy complex of pushing Tessa away when she gets too close but pulling her in when something bad happens to her. Clare has Will set out to be an emotionally closed character, so it will be interesting to see the secrets he has hidden come to light. Overall I liked this novel more than the first for the Mortal Instruments. With a large set of characters, Clare makes them uniquely different so no matter what you will have to like at least one of them. With a shocking twist ending, and an epilogue that has you reaching for the next installment, Clare is back in an earlier time shadowhunter world, one that wants you to grab your coat and head to drizzly London to see what's next. ...more

Clockwork Angel , and by-in-large The Infernal Devices series is a hop, skip and a boat ride way better than the Mortal Instruments. From the first word, to the last, I absolutely loved this book. While I really shouldn't have, I made huge comparisons between this and City of Bones, and there were overall improvements.
