I absolutely loved Cinder, and despite warnings from many a respected Goodreads...er(?) that book two wasn't as good, I enjoyed Scarlet just as much. Now, they were two vastly different reads. Scarlet took a lot longer to really engage me, but it also had a much stronger ending, IMO.
I had some gripes. They were minor. I disliked the romance aspects of the book, thought they felt oddly handled, but they weren't in your face so they did nothing to detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Again, the concept itself was intriguing...the futuristic/fantasy fairytale retelling with the bonus of a (potentially) redemptive take on an age-old villain. But this reader ultimately found the execution a bit exasperating.
It started out with great promise. Somewhere in Southern France, seemingly far removed from the Eastern Commonwealth and the events of the first book, we're introduced to Scarlet Benoit--a fiery farm girl with a hoodie fetish and a missing granny.

Even though Scarlet wasn't as good as Cinder, I enjoyed it for the most part. Scarlet and Wolf were descent characters but Scarlet got on my nerves a lot. I usually don't like when characters are so stubborn to the point of stupidity. Scarlet's obsession in finding her grandmother became bothersome after a while and made her character sort of one dimensional. I think I only tolerated her scenes because of Wolf.

After finishing Cinder, I liked this series but I wasn't hooked to it. Now I'm salivating with the rest of the fans for Cress, which needs to be released, like, NOW.
Scarlet was awesome. Plain and simple. It kept my interest the entire time and twice this week--which just so happens to be finals week--I stayed up later than I should have to continue reading. (I'm most definitely paying for it with headaches and tiredness, but it was well worth it.)

Initially, I was frustrated that we didn't find out more about Cinder's situation immediately and I hated that this new girl, Scarlet, was getting the spotlight on her, but somewhere along the way I started to like her story arc a little bit more (though she remained frustrating for the most part). It was nice to see that Cinder still got parts for herself as well though, because every part was Cinder was fantastic, to be honest. She's just an excellent character (and I might have a soft spot fo

3.5 I loved it at times, but it got really slow in the middle and didn't pick up till all the characters came together. I liked Scarlet, but didn't really care for Scarlet/Wolf till the end. This book made me love Cinder more and I found myself wanting to just read her scenes. Captain Thorne made me love this book more than Cinder and I hope he has a bigger part in Cress, because I'm obsessed with him.

I don't really know what to say, it's just so.... good.

I love the way the author combines the new characters with the old ones and the way their lives are intertwined. The little love stories are so sweet, it is fun to watch the way they develop.. It is such a captivating story, and I can't stop reading!!
I wonder if "Captain" Thorne is "Captain" Jack Sparrow?..

Definitely not as good as Cinder, Scarlet's character wasn't nearly as badass as Cinder and Wolf wasn't nearly as adorable as Kai. Their romance was... Ew. No. The second half was definitely better. I really hope Cress picks up again and we get as little Scarlet/wolf as possible.
