I'm not going to lie; I actually had really high expectations for Heir of Fire and Heir of Fire met them, but in a different way. It was my least favourite book in comparison to the first two book of the series, but Heir of Fire is so different, it is practically impossible to compare to the other novels. There are so many elements in the novel that the first two books don't focus on, primarily the sacrifice and weaknesses.

I am so glad that my irritation and hesitancy with Chaol in the last book was intentionally done. By the end of Crown of Midnight, I was like hmm… the romancey aspects are not doing it for me, not sure the author is selling me on that, but the plot is really good. Well, the plot gets even better in this book, and finally, there is a male interest that I feel can actually build something with Celaena. Although I get the sense that they’re going to be mates or something similar (if fae can even ha I am so glad that my irritation and hesitancy with Chaol in the last book was intentionally done. By the end of Crown of Midnight, I was like hmm… the romancey aspects are not doing it for me, not sure the author is selling me on that, but the plot is really good. Well, the plot gets even better in this book, and finally, there is a male interest that I feel can actually build something with Celaena. Although I get the sense that they’re going to be mates or something similar (if fae can even have two in a lifetime? not sure how that works in this series’ world), I’m not 100% sold on the potential romance quite yet; there’s just textbook good potential. Celaena and Rowan are almost too similar, but I do love that they are building a friendship. She finally understood that Chaol couldn’t accept her for who she was (even Chaol had some self realization on this topic, thank god), and now she has someone in her life that does accept her - her magic, temper, arrogance, the whole lot of it. I liked Celaena a lot more in this book too because it felt more focused on her journey to self-discovery than anything else. While I understand it’s going to be important for later, the continual interruption of the journies of the characters I already know and want to see evolve with the Ironteeth parts was annoying. It seems to be a habit for Maas to throw morally gray characters at me, force me to hate them for a book or two, and then show me that they’re really cool, and it is already starting to get a bit old. They’re obviously important, so I will probably really regret saying this but - I do not give a single shit about the Ironteeth clans. Their history makes no sense to me, and I don’t think that part was intentional by the author. The witches’ motivations are awful, and I don’t care if they’re beautiful. In fact, I feel like they’d reek to high heaven in reality. I found myself thinking “ughh can we just get on with it” every time a chapter started with “Manon…” I know that people have not read these books purely because of the the third person viewpoint. I tend to like third person. However, it did get to be too much during certain scenes in this book. There’d be three males talking, and Maas would just keep using “he” or have one male speak while in the same paragraph describing what another male was doing. I consider myself a pretty great reader, but scenes like those were even hard for me to follow at times. I’d have to re-read paragraphs and still guess who the hell was talking.
