This is a very enjoyable, educational and even inspirational book. It was one of the best books I have read in a very long time.
It celebrates education and character, and shows how one can deal with very difficult circumstances. I loved the protagonist in this book, Count Rostov. He is wise, funny, courageous, thoughtful, kind and more. His speech is clipped, humorous and considered, his mind a well of insights and knowledge, and his approach to life refreshingly positive and original. Surrounded by several other equally well drawn likeable characters, somehow the author sustains the whole narrative sweep of a century of Russian society and history within the confines of a hotel where Rostov is held captive.
