I think I was born an aficionado of Historical Fiction. Certainly I don't remember a time before.
Just before A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW was announced as our first read for this quarter, I had discovered, and determined to read THE WITCHES OF ST. PETERSBURG, a novel whose setting is almost immediately prior to the time period of A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW. Unfortunately for me, at the moment I only have access to the audio versions of either, so I hope to "re-read" both soon in text.

Brilliant last line! What is it with Russian books and quote-worthy opening and finishing lines!
Russia is oft-painted in gloom and despondency, especially in the timeline after the revolution. However, by a sleight of hand, the author here took an aristocratic noble from War&Peace and relocated him to the Bolveshik Russia.
Sleight of hand why - because it allows the reader to see what is wrong about Russia without being taken to the Gulags or being introduced to some KGB thug. In the setting of ...more

A superb book. I had not previously read anything by this author. His writing style is fantastic —- clear, concise, witty. Beautifully written.
The characters are absolutely wonderful. I have rarely met a character as likeable and well formed as the Count. The other characters are also compelling, filling out a wonderful cast.
At first, I was concerned that the structure of the book would lead to a “plot lite” series of vignettes. I was wrong. The plot was perfect for this book. I really cared wha ...more
