Every time I sat down to read this story, Count Rostov gently took my arm and led me through his closet and into the world of 1920's-1950's Russia. Leisurely but well paced walks through the hotel, enjoying - no, savouring - cups of coffee and aperitifs, I heard story after story of a most magnificent life.

I have a confession.
When I finished this book, I cried.
I cried for the sheer joy of coming to know the characters in this story.
I cried for the joy of having inhabited the world of this novel for a few brief days.
Mostly I cried for having the opportunity of reading this truly wonderful piece of literary art.
There are many books currently vying for my attention. I am so grateful that I spent the last 5 days with this one.

An excellent historical fiction audio. I really enjoyed the setting at the Moscow hotel, found the characters to be engaging, and thought the plot was very well done. The narration by Nicholas Guy Smith really added to my enjoyment.
