What Members Thought

I have issues with this novel. On the side of the good, it demonstrates LeCarre really going into an unusual area of espionage-storytelling (for him at the time) which is the 'historical' or 'period-piece' novel; and so he is to be applauded for that, naturally. There is richness in what he achieved in his descriptions of England in the 1930s. There is inventiveness in the characters and in the plot development; in the motivations. In fact the story has a really elegant build-up.
