Ever since learning in one of those "history of James Bond" books that Blofeld and SPECTRE only appear in three of the original books - Thunderball, OHMSS, and You Only Live Twice, I decided to reread this "SPECTRE Trilogy" sometime, (having not reread any of the original Fleming stories in over…Lord, must be 50 years). I have my dad's original paperbacks of the last two books, but the problem was finding a cheap copy of Thunderball - which I finally did at McKay's (God bless 'em), so here we go

I just finished "Thunderball" and "The Spy Who Loved Me" over the past two weeks on my way toward re-reading the entire Fleming canon. I have to say what's most attractive about this journey for me is not so much selecting a favorite Fleming, but observing in one fell swoop (so to speak) how Fleming improves as a writer and becomes more comfortable with his main character. Next title on my list is, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", the Bond novel I've been anticpating most.

I really loved this book. It had all the usual elements required for a good Ian Fleming Bond book- women, gambling, danger, and a bit of a mystery. This book also introduced SPECTRE, which will now be Bond's arch-nemesis since SMERSH went away.
