I suspect that the following passage (on p. 56) sets the stage for at least the romance of this story quite as well as any other. It also, by the way, sets the historical tone of the book: “(o)n this day she lay down and hung her face over the cliff to see down the waterfall… She had Oliver Ward hanging onto her ankles to make sure she didn’t spill over.
