I honestly don't know how I would rate this. I wish there was a half star. I feel that it should be 4.5 stars, but not quite a 5 star. 5 stars are left to books that I would read over and over again. This book was so rich, emotional, transfixing, and so real. But it also has tragedy and its so real I cried at certain parts. Some were for joy and some were for sorrow. I loved it, even though my heart was breaking for these characters! When the characters made decisions I knew could only end in heartache, I could still see why they did what the did. A riveting read that brings up moral dilemmas and how flawed human beings deal with difficult choices.
This was a very intriguing story regarding the lives of two couples and a baby that was found in a boat by a lighthouse keeper. The baby was in the boat with her father who had died. The lighthouse keeper's wife had 3 stillborn children and wanted desperately to have a child of their own. Easy and quick read. Good and plausible story, engaging characters.
Many will say it was a predictable ending but there were several possibilities (who ends up with the baby).
The author teases back and forth between the possibilities.
I tried to predict but didn't quite get it. Part 3 felt rushed--the aftermath.
I grew to care about the people and it was not satisfying.
I expect the movie rights will quickly sell and we'll see this as a movie.

I was surprised when I saw on the end flyleaf that this is a first novel. It is a riveting story.Warm moments, hard moments, no sugar coating of characters' responses or flaws ; I couldnt stop reading it til I was done. I will look for this author's next book.

Started slow but exploded with the impacts of moral dilemma about 2/3 of the way through. One of the better finishes of books lately read. I have a feeling this book and the issues it raises will simmer in my subconscious for a long while.

I would give 4.5 stars if it was an option. I did not want this book to end. I highly recommend this beautifully written novel. It is moving and thought provoking and ultimately about love.
Very touching, written well, twists I did not expect.
