A friend raved about this series at GRL, and JCP was so very kind as to give me the first book. Well, "kind" is a bit of a misnomer, because now I'm hooked and I need to go buy the rest RIGHT NOW AND READ THEM OMG. Damn it. First one's free, indeed.

Well color me intrigued. This was a really well balanced blend of the mystical/paranormal with the realistic. I’ve always been fascinated with psychic gifts and their uses; this was a really cool way to utilize them. Really great characters fleshed out this story well and for all that it’s short everything there was needed and their weren’t any holes, nor was it rushed.

Victor Bayne is a new breed of detective. He’s the Psy part of a PsyCop team. He’s gay and he sees dead people. Well, not just Well color me intrigued. Really great characters fleshed out this story well and for all that it’s short everything there was needed and their weren’t any holes, nor was it rushed.

Victor Bayne is a new breed of detective. He’s the Psy part of a PsyCop team. He’s gay and he sees dead people. Well, not just see them, but talk to them and interact with them, in fact half his time is spent trying to find places they aren’t and ways to tune them out, the easiest of which being a specifically engineered psych drug. Now his Stiff (non-psychic) partner is retiring and he’s going to be left getting used to someone new. On top of that there’s a new serial killer on the loose and nothing psychically seems to add up.

Jacob Marks likes working for PsyCop. He has a good partner in Carolyn and her human lie-detector abilities are no joke. Still he’s fascinated with Vic and meeting the man at his partner’s retirement party is too good an opportunity to pass up. When Vic’s new partner is put on suspension for hiding her own abilities Jacob certainly isn’t devastated to find out that he and Carolyn are going to be teaming up with Vic to solve this serial killer case.

I liked these guys a lot and the world building here is fantastic! The concept was great and the variety of psychic abilities were a lot of fun. The mystery/thriller aspect was just out of reach enough to keep you fascinated waiting to find out more. I loved the way the killer kept his identity secret. I really hope that we get to see more of Vic’s temporary partner in the future. I liked her a lot.

If I had one complaint with this story it was that I wasn’t getting Jacob’s side of things. I wasn’t really sure where Jacob’s initial attraction comes from. I like him and Vic together, but because they were meeting for the first time, or first real interaction at least, I didn’t understand why they so immediately ended up in “bed” together…ok so it was a restroom, but still. I liked the rest of their interactions I just didn’t understand what sparked things initially.

Great beginning to a series with this one though. I can’t wait to see how it all develops. I’m all a tingle to learn more about Vic and his abilities. I’m sure things can only get crazier in his life. Yippee! Just no more soul sucking serial killers please….*shudder*. Not so nice of a bad guy there. I’m curious to see how Vic and Jacob’s relationship develops and who he’s going to really fall in with as a partner. This series has so many avenues it could go in and I can’t wait to see what paths it walks. Solid 4.5 stars overall because I can’t wait to read more. ...more

3.49 stars-I loved this and couldn't believe I was so hesitant to start the series. However, one thing that icked me out. The way that Jacob has no qualms with being "with" Vic while he was high, esp the first time, when he knew it?? And suddenly after one screw they're together?? I'm confused. I am however invested in the story, love the writing and Vic and will keep on reading! ...more
