I really loved Last Night I Sang to the Monster. It was sad, beautiful and powerful. It moved me deeply, making me cry buckets, shredding my heart to pieces and putting it all back together. I’m not really a crier. If a story has the kind of power to turn me inside out, then I want more.

“Another secret of the universe: Sometimes pain was like a storm that came out of nowhere. The clearest summer could end in a downpour. Could end in lightning and thunder.”
The title itself was enough to make me want to pick this book up. I mean come on... Don't you think the title's catchy? Two boys named after two famous people (Dante Alighieri and Aristotle) and they were going to discover the secrets of the universe. How awesome is that? This book was one of my required reads for a YA literature class, as part of my MLIS program. I listened to Lin-Manuel Miranda narrate the story on audio CD while I was driving to and from school and around town. It's a fairly short story and encompasses a little over a year in the life of two teenage boys named Dante and Ari (short for Aristotle).
