These images ask students to take a second look. At first glance, urban street chalk drawings look extremely real. At second glance, they’re in the middle of a city street. These images may be paired with the book The Little House. The images in the book suggest that urban landscapes are drab, dirty, and uninviting. The images beg the question: how do these street chalk drawings change the tone or feeling of the urban landscape? How does it make viewers feel? I would introduce a unit on revision using these images and the text, The Little House. The street chalk images are a visual representation of someone’s “revision” to the urban landscape. These chalk drawings have purpose and power. The artist created them deliberately. Why might the author put the drawings in the city and not a suburb or small town? Students should purposeful, direct questions about why the artist created what they did and where they did. They should also focus on the effect the drawings have on the landscape. Using these ideas, students will move into practicing the RADaR skill. The infamous, unidentifiable Banksy has been has become a sort of political activist through the street art he creates. After looking at several powerful, thought-provoking images of Banksy’s art, students should wrestle with the ways in which people enact change? Is Banksy creating change? Is this an appropriate way to create change? I really want students to discuss this as a whole group. Street art has always had a negative connotation, but when we think that way, are we missing a larger message the artist is trying to send? I would have students create their own Banksy-esque art pieces and write a defense of their art piece. What statement is the piece making? What do they want to see change? Who do they want to see this piece? Where would they put their art piece?
