Recommend me a book or two about a male protagonist who's suffering from mental illness. I prefer YA books. A tearjerking one would be wonderful. :)

YA book. Lonely boy makes friends with French man named Roger and young woman (model?) with a red & white scarf. His parents are divorced, mother has boyfriend. Read in 1970's. Spoiler ahead.

SOLVED. YA Coming-of-age? novel. Hallucinating Krakatoa. Protagonist goes to pond wi small island, tells stories about how it's Krakatoa (or other volcano). Gradually imagines it's real, volcano explodes when life is going bad. Read late 1980s-1995.
