8575 Mine would be (is) Jimmy Ricker, a name combining my middle name and my Mom's maiden name. H.I have been planning to use this name for many years, and will if I ever get finished with the book I started and get it published. :)

8575 I of course see it as education. From the standpoint of a teacher, it is better to have MANDATORY reading lists... but give a selection ON that list to choose from. Reading is fast becoming a lost art in this country as young people want to see it or play it. Books do not have the bells, whistles, and flashing lights they want, and the imagination grows more and more stagnant. By making the reading mandatory yet still providing choices, the chances of "hooking" kids on reading goes up. Not to mention if today's kids are left to their own devices to choose what they WILL read it will be confined to gossip mags and graphic novels.

8575 Sorry, been busy with semester-end crap. To Kill a Mockingbird sounds good to me.
8575 No doubt or hesitation, it would be Anne McCafferey. I have had so many hours of pleasure from reading (and re-reading) the Dragonriders books, plus she is SCAdian! What more can you ask for? (No disrespect to Pentwyvern of course!)

8575 I like Vic being done in by the wife. I REALLY like it, sadistic bastard that he is! As for Deucie... I say he should start his own monastery, and try to reach the other creations of Vic's. He can not be the only one that is becoming more human in some fashion.

8575 Too true, too true. So what do you think will become of our intrepid hero (and former villain) Deucalion? Beat Victor? End up in a dual destruction? Win the heart of the hard working detective?

I definitely want to finish the trilogy, despite the lack of great characters!

8575 I can't help but wonder, as a Special Ed teacher, where the hell he's going with an autistic child. But I admit I am very intrigued by the idea.

8575 OK, now that we have had a chance to read the book, or to start reading the first part of it... what are your first impressions of the storyline?

I think that I like hte updating of the mythos. The new "creature" seems both more human and more interesting than Shelley's original. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Sometimes, screwing with tradition or with a legend is just plain bad. I normally hate it, as in the whole "Red Superman, Blue Superman, Electrical Superman" crap and the idea of Wonder Woman "not wearing the star-spangled underwear" idea {which I think helped kill the plans for the big screen movie{.

I must admit that I am intrigued by this version, though. And I love the way Dr. Frankenstein has been reworked into even more of an uber-baddie than thr original. I think he is even more evil this time around, but we shall see.

Your thoughts?

8575 OK, here we go, time to read our new book. Before we start discussing the book itself, are there any alternative versions of Frankenstein that you have read and really loved? Or really hated? So far, I have really only read Shelley's original story, and of course watched a myriad of film adaptations. I am looking forward to this trilogy.

And speaking of the trilogy, talk about timing! Teh first two books came out in 2005, and the final one is just now getting released.

I really enjoy Dean Koontz' work, and Kevin J. Anderson's as well. I am anxious to see how they do on a collaboration.
8575 Hmmm. I think I wold have to say "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
8575 True, they do. However they don't (as I recall) heavily stress a gender difference, with the females being witches and the males being wizards. Either way, I am enjoying the books and absolutely LOVED the Harry Potter books. Well, with the exception of a couple of the deaths. And I am not 100 percent sold on the final outcome of the final book (trying to be careful in case someone hasn't read the last book)

8575 Thanks, Kim. I would love to. Just let me know when to start LOL!

8575 OOOO Can't wait to get this going! I was shocked to find out that books one and two were both written in 2005, but book three is just now about to be released! I have both published books from the library, chomping at the bit to get started LOL
8575 I see that there are new books in the series, and also Butcher has a couple shorties on his website :) WHEEEE! I have them ALL on order at the library, as well as season 1 on DVD of the series. Yep, I liked it, despite the whole wizard/witch thing. We males are ALSO known as witches, but the story was good enough to overlook this slight little thing. Besides, its an alternate universe anyway.... right?

8575 Yes, this sort of bugs me too. Not really bad, normally, but then again there are times when it is SO prevalent that it is nearly impossible to enjoy the book. THEN I get really pissed about it.

8575 How about Dean Koontz's Frankenstein. Book one, Prodigal Son? By the way, I lost my copy of Dresden, finally found it and am half way done. Only negative was the woman = witch, man = wizard thing, but oi the whole I love it!
8575 I was late starting the book, but so far I like it a lot. I think I will read the rest of them if they are as good as this one.
