83571 Secret Passageways to Hogwarts
Hogsmeade and Hogwarts have a shared history, as well. There are at least eight secret passages that run between the school and Hogsmeade (PA10), all but two of which were built for reasons unknown (PA18, DH29). It's possible that some were used during major historical events, such as the 1612 goblin rebellion that centered in Hogsmeade (PA5); more recently we've seen at least two used in the final battle to defeat Voldemort (DH30).

We actually know a fair amount about the eight passageways:

Hogwarts third-floor corridor to Honeydukes cellar
To enter this passage from Hogwarts, one needs to tap on the statue of the one-eyed witch in the third floor corridor and say "Dissendium." It leads to a trap door in the floor of the Honeydukes cellar. Unknown to Filch, this passage was discovered somehow by James, Sirius, Lupin, and Pettigrew, who included it on the Marauder's Map; Fred and George then used it extensively, and eventually taught Harry how to get through it as well (PA10).

Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack
When Remus Lupin came to Hogwarts as a werewolf, this passageway was built (and the Whomping Willow planted) to give him a place to go when he transformed every full moon. The tunnel is accessed by prodding a knot on the trunk of the Whomping Willow, and it leads to the basement of the Shrieking Shack (PA21).

The Room of Requirement to the Hog's Head Inn
A secret passage that "opened" in 1998 to allow renegade Hogwarts students who were in hiding to access food. Though the door is in plain sight in the Room of Requirement, the passageway can only be accessed from the Hog's Head through the portrait of Ariana Dumbledore on the second floor of the inn (DH28, DH29).

A secret passageway behind the mirror on the fourth floor
Fred and George used this passageway, also unknown to Filch, extensively until it caved in c. winter 1992 (PA10).

Four secret passageways that Filch knows about
Not all of these passages necessarily lead to Hogsmeade, though "most of them" probably do. Regardless, nobody can use them, because Filch keeps watch over them (PA10). One of these is behind a statue of Gregory the Smarmy"> (PS9).

83571 Zonko's Joke Shop
joke items
Zonko's is a favourite place for Hogwarts students to shop. They carry "jokes and tricks to fulfill even Fred's and George's wildest dreams," including Dungbombs, Hiccup Sweets, Frog Spawn Soap, and Nose-Biting Teacups (PA14). During the dark time of 1996 and 1997, Zonko's closed and was boarded up. Fred and George visited Hogsmeade with an eye toward possibly buying the premises and turning it into a Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes (HBP18), though at least right away, this didn't happen.

83571 The Three Broomsticks

pub
A well-known inn and a frequent haunt of Hogwarts students. It's warm and comfortable, is packed every time Harry goes in, and is a great spot to drink butterbeer (PA10), although they also serve firewhisky (GF25), gillywater, mulled mead, red currant rum, and even cherry syrup and soda with ice and an umbrella (PA10). The owner of the bar is Madam Rosmerta, who Ron enjoys watching (HBP12, at least when she's not under an Imperius Curse (HBP27).

83571 The Shrieking Shack

abandoned building
Falsely rumored to be "the most haunted building in Britain," the Shrieking Shack is a favorite stop on any Hogsmeade visit (PA8). However, the wails that were once heard emanating from this creepy building were not in fact ghosts, but rather Remus Lupin transformed into a werewolf. The shack, in fact, was built when he came to Hogwarts, allowing him to transform a safe distance away from the other students (PA18). The shack cannot be broken into from the outside, though Fred and George have tried (PA14); it must be entered instead through a secret passageway, the mouth of which lies under the Whomping Willow (PA17). It was in this building that Harry first met and learned the identity of Sirius Black (PA18), and also where he later watched Voldemort kill Severus Snape (DH32).

83571 Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop
quills & stationary
Located on the High Street; Hermione bought a black-and-gold pheasant-feather quill there in October 1995 (OP16, OP25).

83571 post office
The only wizarding post office we ever hear of, where at least three hundred owls, from Great Grays to tiny Scops ("Local Deliveries Only"), wait to carry messages. They sit on shelves that are color-coded, depending on how fast you want your letter to get to its destination (PA8). It is also referred to as an "owl office" (PA22).

83571 Madam Puddifoot's

tea shop
A small, cramped tea shop with decor on the tacky side of frilly (such as floating golden cherubs throwing pink confetti), located ust off High Street. The only Hogwarts students who seem to patronize the place are trysting couples. Cho Chang suggests it for her Valentine's Day date with Harry; somehow, he never seems to develop a desire to return (OP25).

83571 Honeydukes Sweetshop
candy
A sweetshop, owned by Ambrosius Flume (HBP4) and his wife, which is filled with "shelves upon shelves of the most succulent-looking sweets imaginable" (PA10). In addition to the standard wizarding candy that is sold there, the owners also make their own fudge (PA8) and chocolate (PA12). For obvious reasons, the shop is quite a popular destination for Hogwarts students when visiting Hogsmeade on the weekends (HBP12).

Down in the cellar of the shop, amidst the boxes and wooden crates and known to only a select few people, is a trap door in the dusty floor - which opens to reveal a secret passageway to Hogwarts.

83571 Hogsmeade Station
rail station
A "tiny, dark platform" where the Hogwarts Express ends its journey north from Platform Nine-And-Three-Quarters(PS6). The station is located near the lake, and from there a road extends around the lake to Hogwarts Castle (PA5, GF11). The station is actually quite a distance from the town itself, being on the opposite side of the Hogwarts grounds (map by JKR on the PA/dvd).
The Hog's Head (3 new)
Dec 26, 2012 06:40PM

83571 History

The Hog's Head is an old establishment, with the "filth of centuries" accumulated on the floor of the bar. According to Hermione a goblin rebellion in 1612 was based out of "the inn" in Hogsmeade (PA5), and given that the Hog's Head is the only self-labeled inn we know of in town, it seems likely that the rebellion centered here. Knowing the large number of goblin wars that have happened since, it seems likely that 1612 wasn't the last time the inn served in this capacity, either.

The recent wizarding wars against Voldemort have thrust the Hog's Head back into historical prominence. We know of a number of events that have taken place here:
In the winter of 1979-1980 Sybill Trelawney made a prophecy about the Dark Lord and a child yet to be born. She was partially overheard by then-Death Eater Severus Snape, setting in motion the chain of events that eventually led to the death of Lily and James Potter and the downfall of Voldemort (OP37).

In the spring of 1992 Rubeus Hagrid won a dragon's egg from a disguised Quirrell in this pub, and let slip a secret he needed to get the Philosopher's Stone, nearly bringing about Voldemort's return (PS16).

In the fall of 1995 Harry and Hermione used the Hog's Head as a meeting place and organized Dumbledore's Army (OP16).

In May of 1998 Aberforth Dumbledore provided emergency refuge for Harry, Ron, and Hermione after they inadvertently set off the Hogsmeade Caterwauling Charm. Later that night Dumbledore's Army and the Order of the Phoenix used the secret passageway in the Hog's Head as an entrance into Hogwarts, allowing them to participate in the final showdown against Voldemort and his Death Eaters, while the school staff used the same passage to evacuate students in the emergency (DH28, DH30)

83571 Inside the Tavern

The bar in the Hog's Head is small and extraordinarily dirty and strewn with sawdust (DH28), with the windows nearly opaque and the floor all but invisible beneath the dirt. There is an "ancient wooden till" behind the bar that serves as cash register, and the entire room smells strongly of "something that might have been goats." Even the rags behind the bar seem filthy; at one point, as Aberforth continues to wipe a glass, Harry notes that it seems to be getting dirtier (OP16).

Behind the bar is a "rickety wooden staircase" leading up to a sitting room, most likely an open area between the guest rooms, with a fireplace and a curtained window looking down at the street (DH28). The guest rooms themselves are located above the bar (OP37), and like the bar itself are not noted for being especially clean. Sybill Trelawney, for example, warns Harry against bedbugs (HBP25).

Above the fireplace in the upstairs sitting room is a portrait of Ariana Dumbledore (DH28). Through this portrait is a secret passage, leading into the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts. This passage "opened up" when Neville Longbottom began living in the room in the spring of 1998, though we have no way to know whether the portrait might have led to another part of Hogwarts prior to that time.
The Hog's Head (3 new)

83571 Introduction

Located a block or so off High Street, the Hog's Head Inn has been a fixture of Hogsmeade for hundreds of years. A worn-out wooden sign hangs over the door, advertising with a "wild boar's severed head leaking blood onto the white cloth around it" (OP16). It's known for its cheapness, at least relative to the Three Broomsticks down the street, and attracts a "shall we say... interesting clientele," at least according to Albus Dumbledore (OP37). The bartender, for at least twenty years (OP17), has been Albus's brother, Aberforth Dumbledore (DH28).

Clientele

Though they are allowed to on Hogsmeade weekends, Hogwarts students rarely visit the Hog's Head. Even Hermione had to ask to ensure they were allowed, and when she did Professor Flitwick strongly advised they bring their own glasses (OP16).

The pub doesn't seem to be a particularly popular spot among adults, either; even on a Saturday afternoon when the Three Broomsticks was full, the Hog's Head was empty enough for Aberforth to be spotted out on the street (HBP12). Then, the night that Harry and Dumbledore walked through Hogsmeade before disapparating to the seaside cave, the Three Broomsticks was described as "raucuous" and the Hog's Head "completely empty" (HBP26).

Those that do frequent the Hog's Head seem to be of a particular sort, as described by both Hagrid and Dumbledore above. More specifically, they all tend to keep their heads covered (OP16). This, at least, explains why Hagrid did not realize who he was dealing with when he won a dragon egg from a disguised Qurrell here during Harry's first year (PS16); it also explained how both Mundungus Fletcher and Willy Widdershins were able to spy on Harry and his classmates when they met here four years later (OP17, OP27).
