Doc Savage haul (8 new)
Sep 17, 2017 04:29AM

80482 Great haul! I've only read (and own) a couple of the Nostalgia Ventures reprints of Doc Savage. I'd love to read the PJ Farmer pastiches at some point...

Wasn't aware of that, thank you.

Welcome Manolis (καλωσήρθες!), we're into all things sword & sorcery.
At the core of the group is our bi-monthly group reads (two books/ S&S-related themes, every two months). Feel free to look around and participate, in any way you'd like.
In fact a S&S board game discussion would be most welcome, either in the General Discussions folder or the Sword & Sorcery in other media folder.

That's true for me, too. Starting with The Chronicles of Amber, then the Dilvish cycle and probably re-read Jack of Shadows...

80482 Good article on Roger Zelazny's book:

"Dilvish, the Damned is a solid example of swords & sorcery from its second golden age"

Read the article on Black Gate

It's been long due Seth! I've been savoring my personalized copies for quite some time... Looking forward to your latest book!

That being said, I was bored with it for that very reason. I don't game, so a good bit of the attempts to tie a character or object to a D&D equivalent was lost on me. It was advertised as a guide, but it's a bit too "inside baseball" for me. If you are a gamer, maybe you'll appreciate it more.

I was also puzzled at the lack of photos and illustrations. No movie posters, actor stills, nothing at all. It would have added a lot to the book.."

As I've just started reading my copy, I'm afraid I'll have to agree with you Jack..
The "D&D equivalent" leaves much more to be desired. The writing also seems to be quite uneven. A bit too much fanboy-ish at places while attempting to be authoritative at others. A few trivia sections also feel quite tiring. The lack of pictures I can stomach, given the lobby card and poster quotes at the margin of each chapter. That said, I really glad the book is out there and will probably support a next volume if it is ever published...

80482 Just finished reading Peter Fugazzotto's "Viking-inspired" novella, The Witch of the Sands. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It brought to mind all the classic S&S yarns from the Swords against Darkness anthologies.

Also, steadily continuing The Broken Sword. There was a good discussion about the book on a past group read.
The text I'm reading is not the restored one, and its eloquent prose feels challenging and intoxicating at the same time. I'm savoring two chapters on average, upon daily reading.

80482 Here's the previews catalog entry for the full graphic novel, to be released on November:

https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog...

It's also available on softcover for $8.99 (https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog...)

I'll be placing my order through the local comic-store next week...

80482 I'll be joining with The Broken Sword and probably A Gathering of Ravens (my copy is in the mail!)

80482 If you like Sword and Sorcery, oriental settings (remember Al-Qadim?), graphic novels and err... toilet humor, you have to read Sabertooth Swordsman and the Mayhem of the Malevolent Mastodon Mathematician!
Only drawback is, it's drawn in black and white, making it a little difficult to appreciate the, hyper detailed, pen-and-ink panoramic action scenes, at times (a coloring work akin to Orc Stain would do wonders to improve that).
It is available in two printings:

- 1st printing (October 2013)
Sabertooth Swordsman and the Mayhem of the Malevolent Mastodon Mathematician by Damon Gentry
-2nd printing (February 2017), contains around 30 pages of bonus stories
Sabertooth Swordsman Volume 1 (Second Edition) by Damon Gentry

80482 I'm waiting my copy of Untamed thanks to your review!
Stranger comics have a pretty solid S&S comics catalog. I'm considering "Dusu: Path of the Ancient" next...
Most Slaine titles are great. I'd suggest trying Slaine: The Horned God - Part One, Slaine - The Books of Invasions: Moloch and Golamh v. 1 or Slaine: The King regardless of continuity. They're sword vs Mythos tales, thoroughly researched and drawn to wet (almost) anyone's appetite for comics.

80482 Finished reading volume 1, Head Lopper, Vol. 1: The Island or A Plague of Beasts, on digital format. It's great, cartoony, idiosyncratically goofy and... bloody. The story seems straight forward but during the first arc (four quarterly issues, around 200 pages total) the creator shows great skill in weaving a mythically intricate backstory that resolves, literally in the last couple of pages. Artistically, it brings to mind Mike Mignola Hellboy, Coroum) and Jeff Smith (Bone, Rose). Looking forward to reading volume 2, which hopefully concludes by the end of the year and is released collected, around February 2018...

Binge watched Season 1. I follow the show's writer, Warren Ellis, who writes mostly comics. I was a bit taken aback by the goofy lead character. It wasn't mind blowing and it felt too short for a full season, but I guess I'll be watching season 2 when it comes out...

80482 I recently discovered this Swedish RPG, translated last year for the english market by, non other than the publisher of the Conan RPG, Modiphius.

The tone and setting seem to be, spot-on sword & sorcery.
