LOL! I think this reading year is going to be the year of Fiona reads. I have An Unpardonable Crime (An American Boy) by Taylor and ICTC to read in the next couple of months. I'm sure that there are more little chirps I'll hear, too.

I think Joyce can be a tricky read. I loved The Falls: A Novel by her, but I found We Were the Mulvaneys to be most irritating. I approach her works with caution, as most of them have a rather depressing tone, but she is such an excellent writer that I want to keep her on my list of authors to read.

This book is on my "must read this year" list. I keep hearing a little Tweety bird chirping in my ear to read it. Hmm, could that be Fiona?

6968 So many great adaptations already mentioned here. I'd like to add an oldie, but one of the best adaptations still to date (in my humble opinion), and that would be To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck. It received rave reviews as an adaptation when it first came out in the early 60's and is still acclaimed today.

6968 I just finished Four Spirits: A Novel by Sena Jeter Naslund, a historical fiction read about the civil rights movement and surrounding events in Birmingham, Alabama during 1963-1965. Naslund is a master at this type of novel, teaching the reader much in a compelling story of courage.

6968 I just received an order from Amazon today that included The Swan Thieves, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Death of a Valentine, and Poems. Then I was in Barnes and Noble and picked up A Reliable Wife. Gee, I am now literally surrounded by books in my bed. Heaven on Earth!

6968 For those of you waiting to read The Help, don't wait, just read it. It is a wonderful! Check out my review. I have now started Sena Jeter Naslund's Four Spirits: A Novel to continue the theme of civil rights in the 60's. I love Naslund's writing (Ahab's Wife and Abundance), so I'm expecting it to be a great companion read.

I just found out about the series in another group's posting, so I am definitely going to check it out. Thanks for the positive feedback on it, Fiona.

I loved another book by Geraldine Brooks. What is Year of Wonders about?

Year of Wonders is about the plague in 17th century England, specifically about the year it came to the village of Eyam, in 1666, and the heroic character of Anna Frith. It is base on a true story, as Eyam really did experience the plague, and in an unusual move quarantined their own village. I love this book.

6968 I'm still reading the Hamish Macbeth mysteries by M.C. Beaton, just couldn't quit on the series until I'd reached the end (well until the new one comes out). I have a tendency to get stuck on a series.

6968 Mary, The Help is next up on my list. I'm trying to stop reading on a mystery series, the Hamish Macbeth one by M.C. Beaton, so that I can read my January list of books. Thanks for the positive feedback on The Help.
