And I thought all New Z. made their sentences sound like questions? (Just kidding.)
I'm going to rate this book 4 stars. And my next comment is going to have some spoilers in it, so if you don't want to be spoiled, don't read it! But at the start of my next comment, I'm going to explain what's going on in the first few chapters, so perhaps it'll help get those of you who are struggling to get into the read attached.

Yes, and sorry it's taken me so long to respond! Since we read a book by a group member last month, this month we'll be reading one by a non-member. But please nominate it for next month, Liz! Thanks.

Okay, even if we don't read it, you've got me curious! Just downloaded onto my Kindle! The price is right! :D Thanks for the book recommendation.

If for some reason the link doesn't work, you can hit the "polls" link at the top right of the page. The poll is Poll #4 and mentions June. I'm new at setting up polls, too, so perhaps there is something I can do better to advertise the opening of the poll each month.
Did you receive a message from Goodreads/the group/me alerting you that the poll was open? Please let me know. I thought I sent a message about the poll to the entire group, but perhaps I didn't hit something correctly. I apologize for the confusion.
Please let me know if I can provide additional help. And thanks!

From the book description:
This latest book is sure to please Kirkland's many fans around the world as he returns with a collection of over 40 essays covering topics ranging from prosthetic testicles for neutered dogs to the experience of swimming alongside a 9-foot shark. He covers his topics with the same sense of fun and frivolity that has marked his previous books, and led reviewers to proclaim him "one of North America's premier humorists."

If you have a book you'd like to nominate, please reply to this discussion thread with the book's title,
author, genre, and Goodreads link.
Nominations are open through June 4. Then, we'll create a poll, and you'll be able to vote June 5-7 on which book you'd like to read.
Since last month we read a book by an author not in this group, nominations are open this month for books written by both group members and non-group members... so long as they're indies!
Looking forward to hearing from you!

For me, it seemed like a really long read. While a lot of "stuff" happened in the plot, I felt like a lot of the dialogue and descriptions slowed everything down too much for my personal preference. Sometimes, I just skimmed, waiting for the action to begin - the characters seemed to talk a lot to each other, and this dialogue didn't move the story forward. So, I found the read off balance, a bit, with crazy action-packed occurrences - roofs falling down, shootouts - mixed with a lot of hanging-around-not-doing-anything-relevant-to-the-storyline sections, too.
And the take on the imaginary friends was fascinating. I liked that element of the story for certain.
Another aspect of the novel that I really enjoyed was the story's uniqueness. Certain plot twists and the element of the imaginary friends - I honestly have never read anything like this! And I mean that in the very best way. I appreciated the singularity, the freshness of this story.
And that, to me, is also one of the joys of being in a book club - I read books I normally wouldn't pick up.

I'd begun reading Deadly Obsessions before I left and just couldn't abandon it, half read, for a couple days!
As Kristine is a group member (hi, Kristine!), I was a little nervous about reading her book. I mean, what if it wasn't so great? What could I say? Luckily, that's not a problem. I found the book very readable and I found myself drawn in to the characters' lives. And yes, Karysa, H-O-T!!! is one way to put it. Phew!
I found myself thinking of Kristine's comments on the WG2E, which I'd read recently. http://thewritersguidetoepublishing.c... is the link to her story.
"I’d apparently broken some of the unwritten rules of romance. No one wanted to read about a movie star. Women can’t relate to them, can’t fantasize about them. Say what? Also, it seemed the stalker theme was overdone. Again, say what? Pretty much every love story has been told, but it’s our challenge to switch it up a bit and make it unique," is part of what she said.
Whether Kristine broke some rules of romance, I couldn't tell you. And I don't care. The book worked. While reading, I found myself agreeing with Kristine's points.
Thanks, Kristine, for a great book... one I couldn't leave at home!
