58421 I'd like to nominate Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt

A short synopsis: Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? What kind of impact did Roe v. Wade have on violent crime? Freakonomics will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

58421 Once everything came full circle and was tied back together, I did appreciate the way this was written.
I enjoy the book ending much more that the most recent TV adaptation. I felt that the killer had an actually motive for the murder (view spoiler)
You almost have to admire Hope, in a weird sort of way. He loved Lucy so much he spent years and years trying to avenge her death
Good book 4/5 stars. I don't think I'll be reading many more however. My husband is reading them all at the moment so I might read one or two more, but definitely not all.

I agree this way of revealing the backstory is interesting!
Usually after the crime is solved, the only details about the backstory you know come from the person who solved the crime (like if Holmes was explaining how the clues were put together)
You don't normally get a full-on narrative set during the present time.

Yeah I didn't like this part at all."

I don't mind it. It just came out of nowhere."

I was definitely caught off guard too!
"Who the heck are these people, now?!"
Jun 21, 2018 12:48PM

58421 Well, that was odd!
I figured this section is meant to be a prequel to what happened. I was very confused in the first bit. (view spoiler)
It's interesting the way this is written: how Doyle writes the entire mystery, then does a prequel with the backstory and reasoning behind it afterwards.
I"m interested too see how it plays out.
Jun 21, 2018 12:42PM

58421 I"m also curious as to how the rest of the book is going to proceed since it seems that everything is all said and done. Maybe Sherlock will be using the res of the book to explain how he solved it, or a walk-through of the clues.
I'm still disappointed with the lack of development in Watson's character. he still seems to just be along for the ride at this point- which is disappointing. Since the book is written from his perspective, you would think he would be a bit further developed by this point.

(view spoiler)

I was also intrigued by Holmes' first age toxicology test. Nowadays, things are sent to a lab for extensive testing.

58421 I'd like to nominate A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I agree with you! I also always assumed Holme's character to be very grumpy - almost like he's annoyed that no one else is as intelligent as he is! But he's actually very funny! Kind of that socially awkward type! Looking foreword to follow his and Watson's development

58421 I just finished Chapter 4 this morning. I'm also surprised how closely the first episode of the TV series followed the first book. I just recently started watching the TV series (my husband is a fan and when he heard I was going to be reading the first book he was excited to show me the series)

(view spoiler)

I'll probably be finishing the next section tomorrow or the day after. Its a very quick read which I enjoy.
